Where we go in Ohio

Ohio is the easiest state for us to reach after our own. Toledo is closer to us than parts of northern Michigan are, and the whole northern tier — Toledo, Sandusky, Cleveland, Youngstown — is a straightforward day. Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati are further south and still entirely doable for a collection of any size.

What collections in Ohio look like

Ohio is an old manufacturing state with a deep hunting tradition layered on top of it, and both show up in what people own. Collections here tend to be long-accumulated rather than recently bought: shotguns that were bought to use, military rifles brought home by somebody two generations ago, and a great deal of ordinary sporting equipment that was well looked after because it was expected to last. It is also a state where a lot of guns were bought new locally and stayed in one family, which is exactly the situation where original condition and original boxes survive.

Estates in Ohio

Ohio estates are frequently larger than the family expects, because the state's population has been settled a long time and firearms accumulated through several generations of the same household. The pattern we plan for is three layers in one house: something a grandfather brought back, a father's hunting guns, and whatever was bought in the last twenty years. Those layers have almost nothing in common in value terms, and the oldest is usually the one nobody has looked at properly. Industrial Ohio also produces a steady run of well-made tools and gunsmithing equipment alongside the firearms, which is worth putting a number on rather than skipping.

Why get a number from out of state

Most people with a collection to sell start and finish inside their own county, because that is who they can find. A buyer who will look at the whole lot, price every piece, and come to the house is worth a phone call before you take the first offer nearby — and the state line is not the obstacle people assume it is when a licensed dealer is on the other end of it.

How a visit to Ohio actually works

Northern Ohio we treat as an ordinary day trip and can usually offer a choice of dates within the week. For Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati we tend to plan a single longer visit and get everything seen at once, so it helps to know up front whether there is more than one address involved. Nothing needs moving before we arrive and nothing needs to be ready.

Yes. Handling firearms across state lines is routine for a licensed dealer, and it is our side of the job rather than yours. Everything goes through the license and is documented properly, and you get a record of exactly what changed hands.

Do I need to do anything before you come?

No. Leave everything where it is, including the ammunition, and do not clean anything. If you have paperwork, boxes or receipts, put them somewhere you can find them — that is genuinely the whole preparation.
